UK-Bulgaria Partnership Advances Green Silicon
UK-Bulgaria Partnership Advances Green Silicon Carbide Wafer Factory Development

The United Kingdom and Bulgaria are strengthening their strategic collaboration in semiconductor innovation through the development of a Green Silicon Carbide wafer factory, marking a significant step toward advancing Europe’s next-generation electronics and automotive technology ecosystem. The initiative is being driven under the UK-Bulgaria Strategic Partnership, supported by the UK Science and Technology Network (STN) and the Department for Business and Trade (DBT).

The collaboration aims to accelerate innovation, enhance investment opportunities, and promote skills development by connecting government bodies, industry leaders, and academic institutions from both countries. It also supports Bulgaria’s ambitions under the EU Chips Act 2023, positioning the country as a competitive player in Europe’s semiconductor landscape.

Bulgaria has emerged as a strategic manufacturing hub in Southeast Europe and a gateway to Eastern markets. The country currently produces nearly 80% of the sensors used in European vehicles and hosts advanced R&D centers and smart manufacturing facilities, including Melexis in Sofia and Sensata and Schneider Electric in Plovdiv. Its electronics sector is projected to grow from approximately €2.3 billion in 2023 to €2.7 billion by 2028, while the automotive industry, comprising around 380 companies and over 80,000 employees, contributes more than 10% to the national GDP.

As a result of these engagements, the collaboration has facilitated the development of a €350 million investment in a Green Silicon Carbide wafer facility, generating £10.5 million in UK export wins and advancing research in next-generation materials. Additional outcomes include a research memorandum of understanding between Glasgow and Sofia Universities to promote joint projects and talent exchange, as well as an industry partnership between TechWorks UK and Bulgaria’s BASEL to strengthen sector-wide cooperation.
