Solvay Raises the Bar for Ultra-Pure Chemicals With Taiwan Capacity Expansion
More than 70,000 tonnes of annual electronic-grade hydrogen peroxide capacity will position Solvay and Shinsol closer to Taiwan’s rapidly expanding semiconductor ecosystem.
The race to support advanced semiconductor manufacturing is creating a parallel surge in demand for ultra-high-purity process chemicals. In the latest move, Solvay is significantly expanding its electronic-grade hydrogen peroxide production in Taiwan through its joint venture, Shinsol Advanced Chemicals, with the expanded capacity expected to come online by the end of 2026.
The expansion is expected to more than double Shinsol’s annual production capacity, taking it from approximately 35,000 tonnes to more than 70,000 tonnes per year. The facility, located in Tainan, was originally launched in 2023 to strengthen local supply of semiconductor-grade hydrogen peroxide.
Electronic-grade hydrogen peroxide is not simply another industrial peroxide application. Its ultra-high purity makes it an important chemical for wafer cleaning during chip manufacturing, where microscopic contamination can affect yield, reliability and device performance.
That requirement becomes increasingly demanding as manufacturers move toward advanced process nodes and more complex semiconductor architectures.
Taiwan Becomes the Strategic Demand Anchor
Solvay’s investment comes as Taiwan continues to strengthen its position at the center of the global semiconductor supply chain. Growing AI-related chip demand is encouraging additional advanced-node manufacturing capacity, creating corresponding requirements for highly controlled chemical inputs. Reuters reported that Taiwan’s advanced semiconductor expansion, including new 3-nanometer capacity, is contributing to the need for additional ultra-pure peroxide supply.
For chemical suppliers, this creates an important shift: proximity to semiconductor fabs is becoming as strategically important as production scale.
By increasing local manufacturing capacity, Solvay and Shinsol can strengthen supply continuity while reducing dependence on longer-distance chemical supply routes.
