Power Density and Conversion Efficiency Put the GaN Power Devices Market at the Centre of Next-Generation Electronics

GaN Power Devices Market is moving into a broader phase of adoption as manufacturers look beyond compact mobile chargers towards AI computing, electric mobility, industrial power systems and advanced energy conversion. Gallium nitride is attracting attention because its fast switching characteristics can help engineers build smaller, lighter and more efficient power electronics. The latest developments suggest that the technology is becoming part of the infrastructure behind digital growth, not simply an upgrade to consumer charging products.

AI Data Centres Are Creating a New Power Conversion Requirement

  • The rapid expansion of AI computing is changing how electricity is distributed inside data centres. High-density accelerator systems require power architectures that can handle substantial electrical loads without allowing conversion losses, heat and equipment footprint to grow at the same pace.
  • A significant development arrived on October 21, 2026, when Infineon announced an expanded collaboration with NVIDIA around 800V DC power architectures. The work focuses on high-voltage intermediate bus converters, with GaN devices supporting conversion stages such as 800V to 50V, 12V and 6V.
  • This illustrates how GaN is being considered for demanding stages between the main power bus and the processors that operate AI servers.

The Converter Is Becoming Smaller Without Sacrificing Output

Switching speed is one of GaN’s most important technical advantages. In May 2026, Oak Ridge National Laboratory reported that GaN semiconductors enabled switching speeds around 10 to 20 times faster than silicon in the converter work described by its researchers. The team developed and validated a 7kW converter, highlighting the potential to reduce equipment size and weight while improving energy conversion.

This matters in applications where every centimetre of equipment space has a cost. Smaller magnetic components, reduced cooling requirements and compact power stages can help manufacturers redesign chargers, server power supplies and industrial converters. However, the system-level result still depends on circuit topology, thermal design, switching frequency and component selection; the semiconductor alone does not guarantee higher efficiency.

A 10kW Demonstration Signals the Move towards AI-Scale Power

The development of higher-power GaN systems is becoming more visible. Navitas reported a 10kW, 800V-to-50V DC-DC platform using 650V and 100V GaN devices, with a stated peak efficiency of 98.5%. The compact full-brick design demonstrates how GaN is being engineered for power conversion beyond conventional consumer electronics. This is a company-reported demonstration, rather than a universal performance figure for all GaN systems.

For the market, the important shift is the growing focus on complete power platforms. Device suppliers are increasingly expected to support reference designs, controllers, protection functions and system integration alongside the transistor itself.

India’s GaN Portfolio Is Moving beyond Technology Demonstrations

India is also beginning to establish a stronger commercial presence in GaN power electronics. In May 2026, Cyient Semiconductors announced seven GaN power devices developed using Navitas technology. The portfolio is intended for applications including AI data centres, telecommunications, fast charging, industrial power systems and e-mobility.

This launch is significant because it connects device availability with local customer support and the development of a domestic semiconductor ecosystem. As Indian manufacturers expand in electronics, telecom and electric mobility, access to suitable power devices can become an important part of product engineering and supply-chain planning.

Automotive Adoption Starts with the Power Electronics Around the Battery

GaN’s automotive opportunity is developing across onboard chargers and DC-DC converters, where high switching frequency can reduce the size of magnetic components. Texas Instruments describes GaN-based EV power solutions operating above 500kHz in CLLLC converter designs and above 120kHz in power-factor-correction stages, with a stated combined system efficiency of 96.5% for the solutions it presents.

This does not mean GaN is automatically replacing silicon carbide in traction inverters. The two materials serve different operating requirements, and high-voltage traction applications continue to place demanding qualification and reliability expectations on device manufacturers.

Reliability Engineering Will Decide Which Designs Reach Volume Production

As GaN moves into higher-power environments, device qualification becomes as important as switching performance. Engineers must assess dynamic on-resistance, thermal cycling, short-circuit behaviour, electromagnetic interference and long-term switching stability.

IEC 63284 provides a dedicated reliability test method for GaN power transistors using inductive-load switching and hard-switching stress. Its existence reflects the importance of evaluating GaN under application-relevant electrical conditions rather than relying only on basic component specifications.

The Next Market Milestone Is System-Level Adoption

The GaN Power Devices Market is entering a stage in which success will depend on more than higher switching frequencies. AI data-centre power architectures, compact EV charging systems, integrated power ICs and dependable manufacturing partnerships are creating new routes for adoption. The strongest opportunities are likely to emerge where GaN’s speed and power density solve a clearly defined engineering problem—and where device makers can demonstrate reliable performance at commercial scale.
