KAIST Researchers Achieve Major Breakthrough in Ultra-High-Resolution Red Micro-LED Displays
A research team led by the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) has demonstrated a high-efficiency, ultra-high-resolution red micro-LED display, addressing two of the most challenging barriers in next-generation display development: energy efficiency at small pixel sizes and scalable ultra-high-resolution fabrication.
The collaborative effort, led by Professor Sanghyeon Kim of KAIST’s School of Electrical Engineering, involved Inha University, compound semiconductor manufacturer QSI, and microdisplay and SoC design firm Raontech. The team’s findings were published in Nature Electronics, highlighting a new pathway toward displays capable of delivering visuals sharper than what the human eye perceives as reality.
Solving Long-Standing Technical Challenges
The KAIST-led team overcame efficiency degradation by introducing an AlInP/GaInP quantum-well structure, which effectively confines charge carriers and prevents energy leakage at small pixel sizes. By optimizing whole concentration within the quantum wells, the researchers maintained high quantum efficiency even as pixel dimensions were reduced.
To address manufacturing limitations, the team adopted a monolithic three-dimensional (3D) integration approach, stacking the micro-LED layers directly onto the driving circuitry. This method eliminates the need for complex LED transfer processes, significantly reducing alignment errors and defect rates. A newly developed low-temperature fabrication process further ensured that the underlying circuitry remained undamaged during integration.
Key Advantages
- Ultra-high pixel density with 1700 PPI resolution
- High quantum efficiency at ultra-small pixel sizes
- Reduced power consumption for compact display systems
- Scalable fabrication through monolithic 3D integration
- Lower defect rates and improved manufacturing reliability
