IonQ to Acquire SkyWater Technology in $1.8 Billion Deal, Strengthening Quantum and Semiconductor Integration

IonQ, a vertically integrated quantum technology company, has announced its acquisition of SkyWater Technology, a US-based semiconductor manufacturing firm, in a deal valued at $1.8 billion. The move represents a major strategic step in aligning advanced semiconductor production capabilities with the rapidly evolving quantum computing ecosystem. 

SkyWater, headquartered in Minnesota, has long served customers across the sensors and industrial IoT landscape, with expertise spanning MEMS-based switches, mixed-signal ASIC development, and specialized semiconductor manufacturing. In recent years, the company has also expanded into the quantum sector, positioning itself as a quantum foundry offering a technology-as-a-service platform for quantum processing unit (QPU) development. 

IonQ’s acquisition is designed not only to enhance quantum manufacturing capabilities, but also to ensure SkyWater continues operating as a trusted global foundry partner for a wide range of industries. 

SkyWater to Continue Supporting Existing Customers 

IonQ emphasized that SkyWater will remain a pure-play semiconductor foundry and merchant supplier, continuing to serve both new and existing customers with the same quality and operational standards. 

The company noted that SkyWater will keep delivering critical semiconductor building blocks supporting industries such as: 

  • Artificial intelligence and high-performance computing 
  • Quantum technology development 
  • Electrification and energy systems 
  • Industrial IoT and smart sensing 
  • Healthcare diagnostics and advanced instrumentation 

A Strategic Channel for Quantum Networking and Sensing 

Beyond semiconductor manufacturing, IonQ sees SkyWater as a key channel to expand its own portfolio of quantum networking and sensing technologies into broader commercial markets. 

Some SkyWater customers may also be active in quantum development, creating additional opportunities for IonQ to accelerate ecosystem adoption. 

Strong Focus on IP Protection and Foundry Independence 

Both companies have addressed potential concerns about conflicts of interest. SkyWater CEO Thomas Sonderman stated that strict compartmentalization protocols and intellectual property safeguards are already in place to ensure customers can continue operating securely within the foundry model. 

According to Sonderman, the combination strengthens SkyWater’s ability to support the semiconductor engineering demands required at the current stage of quantum evolution, without compromising IP integrity. 

IonQ Expands Federal and Defense-Oriented Quantum Capabilities 

IonQ has been steadily building its quantum sensing and government-focused portfolio through recent acquisitions, including Vector Atomic, which brought Department of Defense contracts and patents in gravimeters, atomic clocks, and related sensor technologies. 

The company has also outlined plans for a space-based quantum network through its acquisition of Capella Space, further reinforcing its long-term vision for quantum infrastructure beyond terrestrial applications. 

IonQ Chairman and CEO Niccolo de Masi noted that acquiring SkyWater enhances IonQ’s vertical integration and positions the company as a central provider of quantum solutions for the US government and allied partners. 

The acquisition highlights a growing trend: the convergence of semiconductor manufacturing expertise with quantum platform development. As quantum computing moves closer to scalable deployment, integrated foundry access may become a defining advantage in the race for next-generation computing, sensing, and secure networking technologies.
